The Transition: Going From Relaxed to Natural Hair

Sometimes your hair just needs a break from chemicals.  Today more and more sisters are freeing themselves from endless touch-ups and damaging heated appliances.  Many of us are going back to our natural hair texture and loving it!  But seamlessly transitioning from straight to natural hair requires patience and effort.  Years ago, the only choice available was to cut off all the hair and start with a short natural.  Today’s experts have found several ways to grow out of a relaxer and keep hair healthy and looking great.

1.  Roller Sets (instead of wrap-setting the hair)–Result:  You’ll get a head full of curls to hide the bulkiness of new growth.

2.  Pressing or Flat-Ironing the New Growth–Result:  Super careful styling with heat will straighten kinky roots, but you have to be so careful to not apply the heat to the relaxed part of your hair shaft.  This is critical to prevent breakage.

3.  Braiding with Hair Extensions–Results:  New growth is hidden with individual braids or cornrows, leaving the transitional process completely invisible.

4.  Sewn-In Weave–Results:  Your hair is cornrowed underneath and completely hidden, making the transition undetectable.  Caution:  The thread can cut into your own hair if it’s sewn too tight.

5.  Going Short–Result:  Close-cropped looks are fashion-forward and look great.  Get a beautiful, short precision cut.
